Paul R Katz MD

Welcome from the Chief, Paul R. Katz, M.D.

The Division of Geriatrics/Aging, one of the Department of Medicine’s newest divisions, serves as the academic home to geriatricians on faculty at the University of Rochester. The Division, consistently ranked among the best in the country, embraces several core values. These include an emphasis on leadership training, interdepartmental collaboration, community integration, educational innovation and the melding of medical practice and research within the long term care continuum.

Over just the past few years five faculty have been awarded geriatric academic career awards from the Health Resources and Service Administration. The geriatric fellowship program, in concert with a recently awarded NIA T32 training grant, prepares trainees for successful careers as clinicians, teachers and investigators. Interdepartmental collaboration, most notably with nursing, psychiatry, psychology, developmental disabilities, neurology, and chiropractic, has resulted in the division successfully competing for over 7 million dollars in the past 8 years.

Text Box:

Partnerships with some of the regions premier academic centers, such as the Maxwell School at Syracuse University, have resulted in the creation of educational programs that help to define new policy and research directions. The division’s clinical activities, spanning the full breadth of the health care continuum, serve the community’s needs through several innovative outpatient and inpatient programs. Finally, the division continues to take the lead nationally in exploring medical practice patterns in nursing homes and the impact of different organizational models on quality of care.
