Color Coded Tags on Cages

A color coded plastic tag system identifies individual animals or cages of animals which require veterinary services or other special services. The color coded (Post-it) tags are available in each animal housing room.

Yellow Tag:

Identifies an animal which has been reported for a health problem on an animal report form. Either a Vivarium or research staff may complete an animal report form and place a yellow tag on the cage. Only the DLAM veterinary staff may remove a yellow tag from an animal cage.

Red Tag:

Identifies an animal currently under veterinary treatment or observation. Only the DLAM veterinary staff may place or remove a red tag from an animal cage. Please notify a DLAM veterinary technician if you sacrifice an animal in a red tagged cage.

Blue Tag:

Identifies an animal that is being monitored in the post-operative program. Only the DLAM veterinary staff may remove a blue tag from an animal cage. Please notify a DLAM veterinary technician if you sacrifice an animal in a blue tagged cage.

Green Tag:

Identifies an animal for which a special request exists. DLAM, Vivarium or Investigator's personnel can place green tags on cages.

Black Tag:

Identifies an animal with a chronic health problem or condition. Black tags are only placed by DLAM technicians.

Purple Tag:

Identifies newly arrived rabbits. These tags are placed by the Vivarium staff.

Orange Tag:

Identifies diabetic animals or ones which require frequent water or cage changes. These tags are usually placed by the Vivarium Staff.
