Welcome to Rochester

An introduction to the city of RochesterSimply put, Rochester is a delightfully small "big city," with many of the benefits and few of the disadvantages of an urban center. It boasts more money managers per capita than any American metropolis except New York City. It offers some of the most appealing and affordable housing in the country—not to mention an extensive and highly regarded parks system, and five nationally ranked high schools.

Born as a milltown on the Genesee River, boosted to boomtown status with the opening of the Erie Canal, and brought to the pinnacle of modernity and innovation by its entrepreneurial patriarch George Eastman, Rochester provides a richness and diversity of life that's hard to find outside of the country's largest cities. Its lively "knowledge economy" draws its strength from Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, Xerox, growing telecommunications, "biotech" and IT sectors and other technology-driven enterprises located here. It hosts the renowned Eastman School of Music, Rochester Institute of Technology, and the University of Rochester (of which URMC is a part)—named one of the "new Ivies" by Newsweek magazine.

Rochester Rated the 6th Best Place to Live in America

Places Rated Almanac recently ranked 379 metropolitan areas and found that Rochester had some of the finest cultural, educational, and recreational assets in the country.  It was one of only two small metropolitan areas to make the top ten, the other being Madison, Wisconsin.  “It reinforces what a great place Rochester is to live and raise a family,” said Mayor Robert J Duffy.

The five cities preceding Rochester in the rankings are: Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland (Oregon), and Philadelphia.

More Kudos for Rochester

A New York City business magazine ranks Rochester as No. 1 among metropolitan regions of more than 1 million people in quality of life. Expansion Management, a publication for executives of companies looking to expand or relocate, compiled its rankings based on housing costs, crime rates, standard of living, traffic and commuting, commercial air access, continuing education opportunities and adult education levels, officials from Penton Media Inc. said. Some 362 metro areas were evaluated in nearly 50 statistical criteria, the company said.

Rochester was followed in the rankings by Pittsburgh; Austin, TX; Boston; and San Jose, CA. Click here to read more.
