Review Process
Each year we receive about 150 applications for admission to the MD/PhD program at Rochester. Applicants are selected for interview based on a number of factors. Grade point averages and combined numerical MCAT scores for students matriculating to Rochester are typically above 3.7 and 32 or greater. However, there are no set minimum requirements and anyone with a passion for research in the context of caring for people is encouraged to apply. Indeed, a major factor in selection is demonstrated passion for research as evidenced by significant laboratory experiences, essays, and letters of recommendation from mentors familiar with your efforts.

Erika Szymanski
My initial reaction when visiting Rochester was that I wanted to be one of these students. Our students are passionate about what they do; they are interested in medicine, in science, and in each other, and the balance is very evident.
Based on these criteria, 40 to 50 students are invited to visit for 2 days, with both days devoted to interviews with faculty representing the medical school and graduate programs as well as members of the MD/PhD Admissions Committee. Current MD/PhD students host these visits and take invited students to dinner on Thursday night. Lunch on Friday provides an opportunity for applicants to meet with the program Co-Directors, Drs. O'Banion and Turner, to discuss the program at Rochester and have questions answered.
The MD/PhD Admissions Committee evaluates all interviewed candidates on the basis of their application file and interviewer evaluations. Candidates will learn, typically within 6 weeks or less, whether they have been selected for admission or wait-list status. Admitted students are invited to return to Rochester at the program's expense for a Revisit Weekend
which provides an additional and extended opportunity for students to explore the Rochester community and the programs, people and environment that constitutes the University of Rochester. Ultimately, we aim to bring eight individuals into the program each year.
Many factors go into making a decision about where to pursue MD/PhD training. We recognize that this is a two-way choice and that a best fit
is the preferred outcome, both for you and us. Thus we encourage applicants to contact us at any time during the process with questions about the Program or the community.
