Program Details

The University of Rochester offers a choice of two American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited training programs:

1) A four-year residency in diagnostic radiology

2) A five-year combined diagnostic and vascular/interventional residency

These residency programs extend from postgraduate year (PGY-2) through PGY-5 (Diagnostic) or PGY-6 (Combined Vascular/IR). Successful completion of an ACGME approved clinical PGY-1 is necessary before commencing radiology training.

Both residency radiology programs provide experience in general diagnostic radiology through subspecialty areas of pulmonary, abdominal, emergency, neurological, musculoskeletal, and pediatric radiology. Skilled interpretation of magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, ultrasonography, nuclear medicine, and computed radiography is an important focus of the program. Training in women's imaging, vascular and interventional procedures, and radiation physics round-out a comprehensive curriculum which meets or exceeds the American Board of Radiology (ABR) requirements.

The Department of Imaging Sciences performs over 300,000 examinations annually at Strong Memorial Hospital and its outpatient facilities. An additional 35,000 examinations are performed each year at nearby Highland Hospital. Imaging volume is increasing approximately 10% each year.

Specialty rotations are assigned at levels of increasing sophistication and experience. Individual responsibilities for procedures, film interpretation, teaching, and consultation are expanded as the resident advances through the program.

A faculty of full- and part-time board-certified radiologists and Ph.D.s, with subspecialty expertise in their respective areas, participate in supervision, teaching, and research.
