Evaluation and Promotion

Evaluation of resident performance is obtained in several ways. For each clinical rotation, faculty supervising the residents are asked to complete a comprehensive evaluation form, review the evaluation with the resident, and turn in the form signed by both the resident and faculty to the program director. Faculty members base this evaluation on the following:

  • Observation of the resident taking a history and performing an examination
  • The resident's synthesis of the findings and proposed management
  • Follow-through with patient care
  • Communication skills
  • Fund of knowledge, and
  • Demonstration of professional, compassionate, and ethical behaviors

Faculty are expected to give ongoing feedback to residents during each rotation.

Each formal course is followed by a written, and at times a practical, examination. A minimum passing grade is required on each examination.

The AAPMR annual Self-Assessment Examination (SAE) is given each year to all residents. It allows residents to ascertain their performance compared to that of the national pool of PM&R residents. The SAE also allows the program director and faculty to assess their teaching effectiveness in the major PM&R subject areas.

Residents meet at least twice per year with the program director to review progress and set goals. Residents also evaluate each of the faculty's teaching contributions on an annual basis.
