Teaching Conference and Rounds
The Department of Neurology schedules a wide range of educational conferences. In addition to these departmental conferences, a large number of conferences concerning the neurosciences takes place within the University of Rochester Medical Center. These include conferences in the Departments of Medicine, Neurobiology and Anatomy, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, Radiology, Pharmacology, Genetics, and others. Major Neurology Department teaching conferences include the following:
Morning Report
-
Selected admissions to the inpatient Neurology service and Neurology consultations are reviewed three mornings each week (Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays) with Drs. Moxley, Józefowicz. or Griggs. Particular patient management dilemmas are emphasized. All neurology residents on the inpatient services attend morning report.

5-1600 Attending Rounds and Professor's Rounds
-
The Stroke and General Neurology Attendings conduct Attending Rounds two mornings each week. Cases are presented, examined, and discussed in detail with the attending neurologist. Designated senior faculty members conduct Professor's Rounds each Tuesday. The most interesting inpatient is discussed at these rounds.
-
All neurology residents on the inpatient services attend Attending Rounds and Professor's Rounds. These rounds are patient-centered and teaching-centered. Rounds occur at the bedside, and examination skills and diagnostic reasoning are stressed.

-
Critical Care Rounds
-
These weekly rounds take place in the medical intensive care unit. The evaluation and treatment of patients with coma, cerebral herniation, status epilepticus, and weakness of acute onset are discussed. Bedside diagnosis is stressed.

Neurology Grand Rounds
-
On Friday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., clinical and basic neuroscience topics are presented and discussed by residents and senior faculty. Visiting neuroscientists from this country and abroad regularly participate as guest speakers. The residents present an interesting case from the Neurology Service for discussion and education from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Informal discussion and refreshments follow Grand Rounds.

-
Resident Luncheon
-
This is a weekly luncheon held at noon on Fridays for informal discussion of topics concerning education, care of patients, investigation, and other aspects of the training program. Additionally, Drs. Moxley and Józefowicz meet with the residents during the lunch hour on a monthly basis for an informal discussion of all aspects of the training program.

Clinical Neurology Conferences
-
These twice weekly sessions cover Cerebrovascular Disorders, Movement Disorders, Critical Care Neurology, Neuro-ophthalmology, Neuroimmunology, Ambulatory Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neuropsychiatry, Pediatric Neurology, and Ethics, and are taught by Neurology and Neurosurgery subspecialists in each field.

-
Functional Neuroimaging Conferences
-
Neurology residents present and discuss interesting CT and MR scans for patients currently in house or seen in the Emergency Department. Neurology faculty members with an interest in neuroimaging teach the residents how to correlate lesions on these imaging studies with neurological deficits on examination.

Epilepsy Conferences
-
Patients with unusual or difficult-to-manage seizure disorders are discussed. Both pharmacologic and surgical therapies are emphasized. Interpretation of EEGs is stressed at this conference.

-
Combined Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery, and Neurology Conferences
-
Faculty and residents from the departments of Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery, and Neurology meet weekly to review interesting imaging studies for patients on the clinical services. New technologies in neuroimaging are discussed on a monthly basis.

Brain Cutting
-
These weekly sessions, conducted by the neuropathology faculty, stress clinico-pathological relationships in gross pathology of the nervous system.

-
Patient Management Conference
-
These weekly clinically oriented, case-based conferences provide guidance on practical issues that arise during the routine outpatient care of patients with specific neurological disorders. Typically, a patient is presented at the conference or a videotape of a patient is shown, following which relevant historical points and physical exam findings are demonstrated. The diagnosis, interpretation of laboratory and radiographic findings, and management of the patient are then discussed.

-
Journal Club
-
Journal Club occurs monthly on a weeknight and all residents attend. Neurology faculty members host Journal Club at their homes on a rotating basis. This provides an informal setting for the discussion of journal articles with the active involvement of attendings, and also enhances the practical understanding of evidence-based neurology.

Basic Neuroscience Conferences
-
This conference series has been designed to supplement residency education in areas of neuroscience. Specific topics that are covered include anatomy, physiology (cellular and systems), pharmacology, genetics and molecular biology, development, neuropathology, and neurochemistry.

-
Pediatric Neurology Conferences
Pediatric neurologists conduct a weekly clinical conference in which a child with a neurological disorder is presented and discussed. During the period of residency, the common, and many of the less common neurological disorders of childhood are encountered in these conferences. A series of core topics in Pediatric Neurology is presented.
