I was born in Vietnam but grew up in Philadelphia. For high school, I went to boarding school in New Hampshire and Vermont where there were plenty of woods in which to do walking meditation. I returned to Philadelphia to do my undergraduate work at University of Pennsylvania and later basic biomedical research at the Wistar Institute. For medical school, I had the wonderful opportunity to study in Israel at Ben Gurion University of the Negev. During this time, I did clinical work in Kenya, India, and Vietnam. Studying abroad also made it easier for me to travel and explore countries and cities such as Jordan, Brazil, Thailand, Prague, and Frankfurt. I feel fortunate now to be part of this Family Medicine residency where I can continue to nurture my interest in global health and to get through residency with lots of support. After visiting Watkins Glen State Park and Letchworth State Park, I look forward to exploring the many lakes and parks in and around Rochester on my days off.
Bethany C. Calkins
A lifelong resident of a suburb of Buffalo, NY, I attended the University of Buffalo for my undergraduate degree. While at UB, I developed a specialized degree in anatomy and pathology in preparation for medical school. Reluctant to leave my wonderful family, I also attended UB Medical School. During my time at UB, I met my future husband, Tim, and we decided that our future together was in the Western New York region. We both love working and playing in the beautiful city of Rochester. When we aren’t working we enjoy spending time with our three favorite little guys – Tim’s sons, Timmy and Ryan, and my nephew, Nolan (and the rest of our families, of course.) I also enjoy dancing yoga, rollerblading, running, and snowboarding.
Ashley T. Gallagher
I was born in Natick, Massachusetts and attended the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Colgate University for my undergraduate degree. The challenges and joys of working as a teacher and after school program coordinator inspired me to pursue a medical degree at University of Texas, Galveston. My husband, daughter, and I are settling into the house we recently purchased just steps from Highland Hospital and Highland Park and look forward to all the handiwork that goes along with owning a home.
Sachiko Kaizuka
I was born and raised in Japan and finished high school in Australia. Since my graduation from Hamamatsu University School of Medicine in Japan in 1998 (Yes, Hamamatsu is one of Rochester’s sister cities!), I have been pursuing my passion for truly integrative, holistic medicine. I went initially into Internal Medicine because Family Medicine did not exist in Japan. Then I joined one of the first community-based family medicine fellowship programs in Japan, at Kameda Medical Center, in 2001. I was fortunate to be taught by US board-certified family physicians there who were great mentors and a source of empowerment. As I grew more and more interested in the psychosocial aspects of health and the mind/body/sprit interaction, it was a great joy to come to Rochester and join this program. I am so excited and grateful that there is such a supportive environment for/among the residents, and there are so many opportunities to learn. Outside of work, I like reading, writing, reorganizing my room, traveling, hiking, eating, and talking with my little nephew in Tokyo via MSN Messenger.
Pebble M. Kranz
My academic and professional background prior to medical school was in theater. I worked for 12 years after college as an arts administrator and a musical theater performer in the Baltimore/Washington area. My favorite (and longest-playing) gig was a nine-month national tour with the Kennedy Center playing “Mom” in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. As a part of my transition from the theater world, I worked as a psychology research assistant at the University of Maryland studying schizophrenia and substance abuse. After this, I dove headlong into medicine and discovered that running off to join the medical “circus” has provided more self-discovery and fun than I ever imagined. Though I initially expected to pursue psychiatry, I’m very grateful to have found Family Medicine, where we can attend to all aspects of our patient's wellbeing-- from the mundane to the existential. I graduated from Goucher College’s post-baccalaureate pre-medical program in 2003 and from Brown Medical School in 2007. I am particularly interested in mental health issues in the context of primary care, collaborative healthcare, women’s and reproductive health, obstetrics, as well as issues in physician, medical student, and resident health. When I’m not busy enjoying my new career, I indulge my fiction-reading habit, go berry and apple picking, practice yoga, garden, and spend as much time as possible outdoors. Currently, I’m enjoying exploring Rochester and taking care of the adorable cottage that I share with my two cats, Miep and Mutki.
Marina K. S. Ma
I was born in Hong Kong and grew up in suburbs of Chicago and Seattle along with two younger brothers. Seeking snow, I spent four years at Dartmouth, where I spent most of my time as an anthropology major studying ancient (and dusty) pottery sherds from México. I attended medical school at the University of Michigan, where I discovered that Family Medicine really fits my image of what a doctor does. I then couples-matched to Rochester, with my SO joining the Emergency Medicine program. In my spare time, I like to read, bake, or dream about one day owning a dog. I also do all sorts of arts and crafts from knitting and cross-stitching to making dollhouse miniatures and always enjoy being shown fun new craft projects!
Carrie L. McNeil
I am originally from a rural community in the Hudson Valley Region of Upstate New York. I studied psychology at Hamilton College, which is where I met my husband, Scott. After college, I took a year off during which I got married. I attended medical school at SUNY Upstate, spending my first two years in Syracuse, where I was very involved with the management of the SC Hope Clinic, which provided free healthcare to migrant farmworkers and the homeless. I moved to Binghamton, NY, for the clinical portion of my training. I love the diversity of Family Medicine, and I am particularly interested in practice management, because I hope to have my own practice some day. My husband and I enjoy cooking, outdoor activities, and music. We especially enjoy live music and are looking forward to exploring the neighborhoods of the city.
Lekisha N. Richardson
I grew up in Tulsa, OK, and studied Biological Sciences at the University of Tulsa. I then moved to Pittsburgh, PA, to attend medical school. This is also where I met my husband. He works as a Graphic Designer. I enjoy vacationing and traveling. I spent two weeks in Uganda, East Africa, during medical school. I have also visited Dubai and London. In addition, I have taken several cruises. My husband and I are looking forward to our life here in Rochester.
Wenguang Kevin Zhao
I was born in Yan Chi, a small village in Northwest China and completed my medical degree at Beijing Medical University. Since moving to the US, I’ve completed a Master’s Degree in Computer Science at the University of Alabama at Birmingham after which I worked as a computer developer and software engineer. Following a year of a Surgery Residency at USC Medical Center, Los Angeles, I came to Rochester to join the Family Medicine Residency and am happily settling into life in the new home that my wife, daughters, and I have recently moved into.
Alicia ZysmanCromwell
I grew up in Honeoye Falls, NY, a small town 20 miles south of Rochester and was fortunate to have two inspirational family doctors for parents. At Princeton, I studied molecular biology and discovered my passion for orange clothing and for my husband, Matt. I returned to Rochester for medical school and have loved discovering the area as an adult; from the Finger Lakes wineries to the Public Market. In medical school at University of Rochester, I also rediscovered the warm, challenging, and rewarding culture of Family Medicine that I had been raised in. I feel so lucky to continue my training in this community. I am interested in women’s health, preventive medicine, and global health. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, cooking, dancing, knitting, and biking with my husband.
