Program StrengthsThe Department of Dermatology at URMC is nationally recognized for its considerable strengths in clinical practice, surgical training, and research. With patients referred to us from all over Western New York, we serve a diverse patient population. Skin disease is commonly influenced by ethnic background, so superior training requires residents to understand how to take care of skin of all colors. Access to a cross-section of the population ensures that our training program gives residents broad clinical exposure. In addition, the large number of patient visits ensures exposure to a broad array of dermatologic entities. Specialty clinics in bullous diseases, connective tissue diseases, psoriasis, mind-body disorders, atopic dermatitis, and urticaria distinguish our medical dermatology experience from most other programs. In these settings, residents become comfortable with management of the most distressed and complicated cases confronting a dermatologist in practice. Many of our faculty are engaged in investigator-initiated clinical trials, bringing their scientific reasoning and experiences to the management of complex cases. Regarding our surgical training, Dr. Marc Brown has an active Moh’s practice that sees as many as 1,600 cases per year. Dr. Brown is a nationally recognized leader in Dermatologic Surgery, and is committed to ensuring that every trainee possesses outstanding surgical skills when they graduate from the program. Our program also offers physician-scientist and Ph.D. faculty with research expertise in immunology, cancer biology, melanocyte biology, psychology, synthetic chemistry, and material science. This broad interest base allows residents to pursue training in clinical translational or basic research. Faculty place a premium on mentorship and work closely with residents to ensure that their training experiences are a success. The program is also distinguished by the contributions of community faculty. The senior clincians practicing in the Rochester community enjoy sharing their expertise by staffing resident continuity clinics on a rotating basis. Their years of expertise and diverse training backgrounds greatly enrich the resident experience. |
