Who can take part in the study?

It is important to include many types of people in this research study.

We include men and women of all races and ethnicities. Both people who have problems with their memory and people who do not have memory problems are encouraged to take part in the study.

Everyone who takes part in the study must be:

  • Age 75 or older, and
  • English speaking, and
  • Primarily living in the Rochester, NY area, and
  • Able to see and hear well enough to complete some tests of thinking and memory.

No one who takes part in the study may have:

  • Taken medications for problems with their memory, or
  • A seizure disorder, including epilepsy, or
  • Had a stroke, or
  • Had a bone marrow transplant, or
  • A diagnosis of cancer in the last six months.

What are participants asked to do?

Participants are asked to:

  • Complete two, one-hour visits at the study office at Monroe Community Hospital.
    • During the visit, participants will be asked to sign a consent form, share basic information about their health, their family's health history, complete some tests of memory and thinking, and donate a small sample of blood.
  • Return each year to repeat the tests of memory and thinking and donate another small sample of blood.
  • Talk briefly with a staff person on the telephone every six months.

Keeping every participant's personal information safe is a top priority. The Rochester Aging Study staff members will do everything possible to keep all personal information confidential and secure.

Participants will be given the opportunity to take part in special programs of healthy aging. These programs include excersie, fitness, nutrition, support and education.
