Curriculum

The Millennial Fellowship Program

Our general pediatrics fellowship program, which has been successfully training general pediatrics academic leaders for 39 years, now has new leadership and a revised curriculum. The Millennial Fellowship Program focuses on research and related academic skills that are essential for success in academic general pediatrics. This three-year program includes didactic and research activities required to earn a Masters in Public Health- Clinical Investigations. Fellows also engage in mentored health services research projects, interactive seminars, community pediatrics activities, teaching, and clinical experiences in general pediatrics.

All fellows are required to complete coursework for the MPH program, and eventually write an MPH thesis. They must conduct two research projects—an analysis of an existing dataset, and a primary data collection project, usually in the same topic area. They receive intensive mentoring, and are expected to report their work at a national meeting and publish the results. The goal of the Millennial Fellowship Program is to bring the rigors of our exemplary research enterprise to bear on improving the quality of healthcare for vulnerable populations and eliminating health disparities. Research is the primary emphasis of the program, and most fellows and faculty conduct health services research, although mentors are available for research in education or community pediatrics as well.

A required seminar series, which is shared with fellows in adolescent medicine and behavioral/developmental pediatrics, introduces fellows to topics in leadership, administration, education, health disparities, and scientific writing. Fellows are invited to pursue further work in these areas with faculty, as their interests dictate. For example, mentored projects with expert faculty in community pediatrics, health literacy, cultural competence and education are possible.
