Adolescent Medicine Research

Fellowship Research

The research activities of the Division of Adolescent Medicine are far-ranging and diverse, but all focus on clinically relevant concerns related to adolescent health.

Fellows acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to design, implement, analyze and report substantive research, under the guidance of a Division faculty member. Formal research class work leads to a Masters of Public Health degree at the completion of the fellowship.

Although a fellow's research project is expected to be completed in one of the following areas, those with a well-developed research question in an area not listed below may collaborate with an appropriate mentor outside of the Division. Areas of Study

• Adolescent Youth Development: A statewide public health initiative to foster youth asset development (ACT for Youth) through community development partnerships is being implemented and evaluated by the Division of Adolescent Medicine as a partner in the Upstate Center of Excellence.
• Obesity Prevention: Community-based public health initiatives in Monroe County are being developed and implemented by adolescent medicine specialists at the University of Rochester.
• Tobacco prevention and control: Studies of adolescent cessation counseling and parent cessation interventions are underway, in collaboration with the AAP Julius B. Richmond Center.
• Adolescent Nutrition and Growth (adolescent pregnancy, eating disorders): A wide range of clinical research is being conducted ranging from interventions designed to increase breast-feeding in adolescent mothers to those intended to increase bone mineral density in adolescents with anorexia nervosa.
• Adolescent Pregnancy: Community based adolescent pregnancy prevention services are being offered and evaluated by our Division.
• Adolescent Health Services Research: Nationwide surveys are being conducted to determine the characteristics of optimal service models for adolescents.
• Adolescent Preventive Health Services: Members of our Division are studying the development and implementation of Bright Futures and Guidelines for Adolescent Preventive Services (GAPS), a preventive service program developed by the American Medical Association (AMA).
• The Northeast Rochester Youth and Family Wellness Project: Through group health education programs offered at selected recreational sites and settlement houses, the health needs of high-risk adolescents are addressed. The project is designed to promote healthy choices in the areas of sexual risk, violence, and lifestyle choices.
