Technologist Development & Continuing Education

The First Wednesday lecture series is directed at lab staff. It's designed to allow people to take time away from their own work in order to learn more about developments throughout the lab and in the related scientific community.

The Department periodically offers audio and video conferences from professional organizations such as the American Society of Clinical Pathology. There are no currently-scheduled presentations, but tapes of earlier presentations are available from Ed Kohmeier (275-7801) for Microbiology or Sue Cross in the ground floor lab office (275-9668) for all other topics.

This year's implementation of New York State licensing requirements for clinical laboratory technologists has created new challenges. The laboratories are currently working with Broome Community College to provide online courses for current lab staff who need to upgrade their educational credentials in order to qualify for professional licensing. The Department is considering plans for a clinical laboratory technology program at the URMC.

URMC staff are eligible for tuition benefits, and many lab staff take advantage of this opportunity to enhance their capabilities.
