Orthopaedic Trauma, Fracture Care
Conditions We Treat
Injuries treated by the orthopaedic trauma surgeon can range from simple ankle fractures or dislocations to complex and severe conditions with the potential for long-term disability. In addition to treating acute musculoskeletal injuries, traumatologists may also be involved in the aftermath of trauma and continue to follow those patients with serious complications from their injuries.
Acute Injuries
Many cases involve multiple trauma patients and can include involvement of the pelvis and hips, as well as upper and lower extremities. Common injuries include:
- Severe fractures of the upper and lower extremities, including high-impact injuries where the bones may be displaced or shattered into many pieces
- Pelvic and acetabular (hip joint) fractures
- Fratures in children, adults, and the elderly
Complications and Chronic Conditions
- Problems of fracture healing such as non-unions (resistant to healing) and mal-unions (improperly healed)
- Infections of the bone, or osteomyelitis
- Limb length inequality
