About The Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation

We are part of one of the nation’s top academic health systems—the University of Rochester Medical Center and Strong Health.  Our entire institution is dedicated to:

Every day, the medical professionals in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation work in partnership to bring these four interwoven missions to life.

Providing the Finest in Patient Care

We are the largest, most comprehensive orthopaedic practice in the Rochester, NY nine-county region. Our physicians cover every subspecialty of orthopaedics and physical rehabilitation and work hand-in-hand to address each patient's unique needs. Treatments range from conservative medical management to complex surgery.

We see many thousands of patients each year, so patient care is always in the hands of well-practiced experts. In fact, as part of the only academic medical center in the region, our physicians are exposed to many more complex conditions and unusual complications than most physicians.

Our experts hold some of the highest credentials in orthopaedic care and physical rehabilitation. They are board certified or board qualified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Many are fellowship trained.

We have emerged as a leader in medical excellence by being the first in the region to learn and use many of the most promising new procedures and equipment. Our clinical programs give those with even the most complex medical conditions reason for hope.

Research for the Advancement of Medicine

The University of Rochester Medical Center is home to one of the few formal musculoskeletal research centers in the country. We conduct dozens of significant research programs including:

For more than a decade, the Department of Orthopaedics has consistently ranked as one of the top NIH-funded orthopaedic research programs in the nation. Today we rank number one.

We are the only orthopaedic department in the United States that is designated as a Center for Research Translation, where we have a $7.8 million initiative to take many promising orthopaedic discoveries from the laboratory bench to the bedside. As a result, we are often able to help patients with challenging cases become involved in research trials that give them access to technology and treatments well before they become widely available.
