| Mission |
|
To improve the health of Deaf people and their families using the results from community-based participatory research. |
Goals |
|
• Involve the ASL community. |
|
• Learn about important health issues for Deaf people and their families. |
|
• Conduct health care research with Deaf people.
• To give deaf people opportunities to learn how to become better informed health care consumers.
• To improve the health of Deaf people and their families using results from research.
• To encourage Deaf people to choose public health and research careers.
• To provide training to health care professionals who work with Deaf patients and their families. |
Long-term Goals |
|
NCDHR will set up community committees for hard-of-hearing people, late-deafened people and others who do not use ASL. NCDHR would also set up community committees for health promotion and disease prevention research for people with disabilities not related to hearing. |
Guiding Principle
NCDHR goals are guided by a "cultural model" (i.e., that Deaf people are a minority group who share a common language - American Sign Language (ASL) - and culture), not a "clinical model" (i.e., that deafness is a condition that should be prevented or treated).
