Our conference schedule is listed below. In addition to didactic teaching, these conferences provide an opportunity for fellows to learn the techniques of effective scientific communication, including public speaking and the proper use of audio-visual aids.
City-Wide Clinical Pulmonary/Critical Care Conference (weekly)
This conference presents a review of clinical disorders and concepts focused on patients seen in our teaching hospitals. In addition to our full-time attendings, selected community physicians actively participate in this conference. The fellows are exposed to a variety of ideas and perspectives. Fellows, rotating residents, visiting faculty, and University faculty present clinical cases of special interest. Two topics are usually covered and speakers provide reference lists. Tuberculosis Conference (biweekly)
Our faculty provides a consulting service for the Tuberculosis Clinic at the Monroe County Department of Health so that fellows are able to gain experience in interpretation of chest x-rays, review the management of these patients and gain perspective about the long- term aspects of tuberculosis care. This interactive session provides a format to review cases and discuss management. These sessions are especially helpful to decide on treatment regimens for drug-resistant TB. Pathology Conference (monthly)
This conference is conducted with staff from the Department of Pathology. Pertinent biopsy specimens from fiberoptic bronchoscopy as well as interesting surgical pathology and autopsy material are reviewed in a state-of-the-art teaching facility, with multiple microscopy-viewing ports and video screens. Formal instruction in lung pathology is also conducted over the course of the year. Pulmonary Physiology, Cell & Molecular Biology Conference (weekly)
This conference is a series of didactic sessions covering the important concepts of pulmonary physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and immunology. These sessions are organized by the senior fellows with participation by faculty, fellows, and visiting scientists. Pulmonary Biology Research Conference (weekly):
This conference presents a wide range of ongoing basic research in lung disease. Faculty and fellows from adult pulmonary, pediatric pulmonary, neonatology, and respiratory toxicology present work from their laboratories. In addition, several visiting investigators from around the country are invited to participate by our faculty. Pulmonary and Critical Care Unit Research Conference (monthly)
At this conference, pulmonary faculty members and fellows discuss ongoing research projects in an informal atmosphere. Hypotheses are reviewed, data critiqued, and future directions discussed. Pulmonary Journal Club (monthly)
Selected articles from the pulmonary and related literature are reviewed. The emphasis of this conference is on critical evaluation of the methodology and conclusions of published work.
Radiology Chest Conference (biweekly)
Specialists in chest radiology review x-rays and give formal instructions in x-ray interpretation.
Critical Care Professor's Rounds (biweekly)
A critical care faculty member makes teaching rounds with pulmonary and critical care fellows who are rotating through the Medical and Surgical Intensive Care Units at Strong Memorial Hospital. An interesting patient from one of these Units serves as the focus for these rounds. Critical Care Journal Club (monthly)
Critical care fellows under the supervision of faculty members review scientific literature which is of direct relevance to the practice of critical care medicine. Basic Science of Critical Care Medicine (biweekly)
Faculty members from appropriate disciplines throughout the Medical Center present didactic sessions covering the basic science underpinnings of critical care medicine. Critical Care Visiting Professor Series (approximately monthly)
Nationally and internationally recognized visiting professors with special expertise in Critical Care Medicine present topics of interest. Sleep Medicine Conference (monthly)
During rotations at the Sleep Disorders Center, informal and didactic teaching sessions are held on the physiology of sleep and the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders.
