Programs in geriatrics and gerontology have grown steadily in Rochester over the past decade following a tradition borne over 20 years ago under the leadership of T. Franklin Williams, M.D. Monroe Community Hospital (MCH), under the direction of Dr. Williams, developed one of the first comprehensive assessment programs for community-dwelling older adults, in the setting of what was to become a nationally-renowned teaching nursing home. Currently, Monroe Community Hospital is at the hub of a number of innovative aging programs and activities spanning much of western and upstate New York.

Following the groundbreaking work of Dr. George Engel, the Division continues to operationalize the biopsychosocial model on a number of clinical and educational fronts. The Division, currently headed by Dr. Paul Katz, was voted as one of the top 20 Geriatric Medicine Programs in the nation by US News and World Report .
