Adult Inpatient Clerkship Medicine Component
Valerie J. Lang , MD
Clerkship Director
Welcome to the Adult Inpatient Medicine Clerkship. Inpatient medicine encompasses the general and subspecialty medical care of the hospitalized adult patient. This is an exciting time to learn in the hospital setting. The rapidly expanding hospitalist movement, advances in subspecialty care, and initiatives in patient safety are changing the way that care is provided in the hospital, yet the fundamental traditions of clinical excellence and compassionate care within the biopsychosocial model remain the same.
This clerkship is part of the Adult Inpatient Clerkship, which is comprised of 3 components—Internal Medicine, Surgery, and a 2 week Basic Science block.
The clerkship is divided into two 4-week sections. At each hospital, students will work with one housestaff team that is composed of one intern (R1) and one upper level resident (R2 or R3). There may be a fourth year sub-intern and/or another third year student on the team. There may be one or more attendings supervising the team.
Students will evaluate new admissions and follow their own set of patients closely during their hospitalization. The rotation is structured with the expectation that students will arrive with knowledge and skill in interviewing and physical examination. The experience will build on these fundamentals and progressively increase student responsibility over the eight weeks.
For the first 4 weeks, each student has been assigned to one of three sites: Highland Hospital, Rochester General Hospital, or Strong Memorial Hospital. At each site, students will meet with a faculty Preceptor for 10 sessions for student-centered learning.
For the second 4 weeks, students will switch to a different site or different team: Park Ridge Hospital, Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, or Strong Memorial Hospital (Hospital Medicine, Hematology-Oncology/CCU, or Transition Team/MICU). Students will participate in attending rounds with their team, hone their critical thinking skills, and increase their responsibilities on the team during this section.
