Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Allergy/Immunology & Rheumatology fellowship programs to train physicians to become consultants who will be clinically competent in the field of Allergy/Immunology and/or Rheumatology; who will be prepared to work in a variety of settings including private practice, academia, as well as other settings; and who will continue life-long learning which will enhance their knowledge base, skills, and professionalism.
Program Description
The Allergy/Immunology & Rheumatology Division of the Department of Medicine offers excellent two year fellowship training in both Allergy/Immunology and in Rheumatology. We also offer one of the country's few combined, three year programs leading to certification in both subspecialties. In addition to outstanding clinical trianing, the fellowship programs at the University also offer excellent opportunities for extended research training with leading scientists in clinical trials, outcome studies, translational research and bench research in multiple areas including: autoimmunity, germinal center biology, developmental immunology, vaccine biology, HIV infection and aging.
Structure of the Fellowship
Allergy/Immunology:
- ambulatory continuity clinic
- ambulatory faculty clinics
- in-patient consultation service
- mentored research (basic, clinical or translational) project with protected blocks of reseach time
- conferences
- pediatric allergy, pediatric pulmonary, dermatology, and otolaryngology rotations
Rheumatology:
- ambulatory continuity clinic
- ambulatory faculty clinic
- in-patient consultation service
- mentored research (basic, clinical or translational) project with protected blocks of research time
- conferences
- orthopedic subpecialty, non-operative sports medicine, physical medicine & rehabilitation, pediatric rheumatology, physical therapy and occupational therapy rotations
- musculoskeletal ultrasound
- DEXA

Application Materials and General Information
Number of Fellowship Positions:
The AIR Division has four fellowship positions in total to fill. These are distributed amongst Allergy/Immunolgy fellows, Rheumatology fellows, and combined Allergy/Immunology & Rheumatology fellows and between first, second and potentially third year fellows since we offer the unique opportunity for a combined fellowship in Allergy/Immunology and Rheumatology. Due to this combined position, in any given academic year, there may not be a first year fellowship position available in Allergy/Immunology or Rheumatology.
Citizenship Requirements:
Applicants must be a United States citizen, a permanent resident, or possess a J1 Visa.
Residency Requirements:
Rheumatology applicants must have graduated from ad ACGME accredited Internal Medicine Residency.
Allergy/Immunology applicants must have graduated from and ACGME accredited Internal Medicine Residency or an ACGME accredited Med-Peds Residency.
