BOOKS - Searching Voyager Online Catalog


Articles -when you're not on campus

  • You will need to use your Miner Library Online password. Students can access Miner Library Online through their Blackboard accounts.

  • If you're a UR affiliate and do not have a password, you will need to apply for a password .

  • If your password is too difficult to remember once you receive it, change it!

Articles - when you know the citation (journal name, title of article, publication date, etc.)

  • Search Voyager (Library Catalog) to find out if the University of Rochester libraries subscribe to, or own, the journal. Search by journal title.The catalog includes print and electronic versions. If the library has an electronic version, you’ll find a link to it in the catalog record.

  • When you find an electronic full-text version of the journal, browse to the volume and page of the article you seek. Or, most electronic journals allow you to search by author, title, etc.

  • If the journal title is not in the catalog, you can order the article through the electronic interlibrary loan system, ILLiad. New users must register first by clicking on the red button for Miner Library first time users in ILLiad. Fees: $5, faculty/staff; $3, Resident; $2, students.

Articles - when you know only part of the citation

  • PubMed’s Single Citation Matcher can help you find the complete citation. If you use Pub Med@UR, it will also link you to full text, when available. Look for the link to Single Citation Matcher under “Services” on PubMed’s left-hand sidebar. If you can’t find the citation, Ask A Librarian.

Articles - full text of an article when you're searching in a database

    For Ovid Medline, Ovid PsycINFO, Ovid CINAHL,      PubMed@UR, Web of Science

  1. After you complete a search, browse through the citations. Look for Full Text or Ovid Full Text link on the right of each citation. If you find that, then click on it to open the article (TIP: To print an article from a pdf, always use the printer icon on the pdf toolbar. If the article is not in pdf form, then click on the Ovid PRINT PREVIEW link, that defaults to graphics full size, and then use your browser print command) or...
  2. If the citation does not say Full text or Ovid Full text, click on the red button that says FIND TEXT or FIND TEXT@UR. A new window will open (TIP: This window will only appear if you have allowed pop-ups on your browser. Disable the pop-up blocker to see it.)
  • If full text is available through a non-Ovid subscription, it will appear in the first line. For best printing results, look for a pdf link (TIP: To print an article from a pdf, always use the printer icon on the PDF toolbar)
  • If the article is not online, then you will see this first in the new window: "Check for the journal or book in Voyager Library Catalog." Click on that.
  • If it is still not available, you can order it through ILLiad. New users must register first by clicking on the red button for Miner Library first time users in ILLiad. The article information already will be filled in. Fees: $5 faculty/staff; $3 Resident; $2 student.

     For Ovid Cochrane, DARE, ACP Journal Club      
      (Evidence-Based Medicine Databases)

  1. After you complete your search, browse through the citations. For Cochrane Systematic Reviews, click on "Topic Review," for the full text of the citation. Print from the Ovid Database PDFs (TIP: To print an article from a pdf, always use the printer icon on the pdf toolbar)..
  2. For DARE and ACP Journal Club: click on "Article Review," on the right side of the citation, as these are structured abstracts/critiques of journal articles. You will find complete information on the journal article that is being critiqued at the top of the abstract page. You will need to follow the instructions for When You Know the Citation, to find the full text of the article that is being critiqued.

Articles - on a topic of interest

Use the following search tools to help you find articles when you have a topic in mind, but don’t know specific titles of articles. There are tricks to searching in each of the resources and the screen for each resource is different. For help with searching:

  • Ovid Medline. World’s largest biomedical database. Use to find articles in all fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, hospital administration. Sign up for a class or contact Margaret Chretien, who teaches the Miner Ovid Medline classes.

  • PubMed@UR. Free version of Medline from the National Library of Medicine. Use to find articles in all fields of medicine, dentistry and nursing. Follow this link to tutorials on how to search Pubmed, or contact Angela Dixon, who teaches the Miner Pubmed class.

  • CINAHL (Ovid). Use to find articles in the nursing and allied health fields. Allied health includes physical and occupational therapy, radiologic technology, emergency service, health education, etc. Sign up for a class or contact Mary Beth Klofas, who teaches Miner Library’s CINAHL classes.

  • PsycINFO (Ovid). Use to find articles in the fields of psychology and psychiatry.

  • EBM Reviews. Includes 5 databases: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, ACP Journal Club, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, and the combined Database of Cochrane Reviews, ACP Journal Club, and DARE. Use to find articles describing the results of clinical research in the field of medicine. EBM Reviews- Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials consists of controlled trials culled from Cochrane groups, Medline and Embase. These databases need to be searched by keyword.

  • Web of Science. Includes Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation Index. Use Cited Reference Search to find articles that have cited a particular article. Use General Search to find articles in all fields of science and social science, including medicine, biology, chemistry, nursing, dentistry, psychology and social work. Follow this link to tutorials on how to use the Web of Science.

  • Other databases. University of Rochester libraries also subscribe to databases that cover many other disciplines (sociology, psychology, politics, statistics, etc.) and are arranged here by topic.

BOOKS

Use Voyager Library Catalog to find out if Miner Library or another University of Rochester Library  owns a book.  Voyager contains records for print and electronic books. 

  • Basic Search - use if you know the exact author or title.

  • Advanced Search – use when you need flexibility.  You can search author/title, subject/title, publisher name,etc. You can use the Limits feature to limit by years, type of material, library, etc.

  • If “&” is used in the title, you will need to type out the word: "and."

  • For help finding books on a subject, Ask A Librarian.

  • If the book is not in the catalog, you can order through the online interlibrary loan system, ILLiad.  Fees: $5 faculty/staff; $3 Resident; $2 student.

TIPS

  • Journal title abbreviations can't be used in the library catalog. Go to: Pubmed@UR/Journals Database to find many full titles.

  • Limiting an Ovid database search to "Ovid full text" gives you access to only about 150 of the thousands of full-text journals to which Miner subscribes.

  • Most medical journals only go back about 10 years online.
