Service Policy

The Edward G. Miner Library is an academic health sciences library serving the University of Rochester Medical Center, including the School of Medicine & Dentistry, Strong Memorial Hospital, the School of Nursing and the Eastman Dental Center. The Miner Library has five User Categories and Levels of Service: Primary Clients (UR ID card), Secondary Clients, Tertiary Clients, Strong Memorial Hospital Patients/Families, Rochester Area Residents.

PRIMARY CLIENTS: University of Rochester ID Card

Medical Center faculty and staff (current or retired) and students, whether part-time or full-time, are the Library's primary clients. They are accorded the highest priority of service, the fullest range of services, and the greatest subsidies for fee-based services. Most services are also provided to those who are actively employed or enrolled in classes on the UR Campuses. The library works with faculty, staff and volunteers at the Strong Memorial Hospital to meet the information needs of patients and their families.

SECONDARY CLIENTS

These individuals receive some services as if they were primary clients. Specific restrictions are indicated on the services chart. The temporary UR ID, which serves as a borrowing card, costs $10.00. Fee subsidies only apply in special situations, and fees are charged for library classes.

STRONG MEMORIAL HOSPITAL PATIENTS/FAMILIES

When an illness or medical emergency strikes, information plays an important role in helping patients make wise decisions about their health care. To supplement the information supplied by health care providers, Strong Memorial Hospital patients and their families are encouraged to use the print and electronic resources available in the library. A staff of highly trained librarians will assist in locating books, journal articles, and World Wide Web sites on virtually any health related topic. Although the print materials are for use within the library only, materials may be photocopied using our self-service copiers or the fee-based copying service. Patients are referred to their local library or the National Library of Medicine's Loansome Doc service to obtain materials that are not in the Miner Library collection.

ROCHESTER AREA RESIDENTS

Members of the Rochester community and the surrounding areas are welcome to use the library's resources for health and wellness related information. Reference librarians will provide assistance in locating appropriate materials, both in print and electronic formats. Literature searches that identify articles written on specific topics, in databases such as Medline, also are available for a fee.
