Exchange Upgrade

The Exchange Upgrade is complete and all mailboxes have been moved. Users should now use http://mail.urmc.edu to access their mail. Listed below are some differences you may notice between our current Exchange 5.5 email system and the new Exchange 2003 email system:

Outlook Web Access 2003 (OWA)

Microsoft Outlook Web Access 2003 has been greatly improved with Exchange Server 2003, providing a new user interface, for easier use and a closer look-and-feel to Outlook 2003, and features such as a spelling checker, additional views, S/MIME encrypted e-mail messages, auto signatures, right-click mouse functionality, quick flagging, the ability to create e-mail message rules, and junk e-mail folder capabilities.

Users whose mailboxes have been migrated to Exchange 2003 will access email via the Web clicking on NEW - Outlook Web Access 2003 at the Email tab of the Intranet home page which will bring up the OWA login page. At the login page you simply enter your userid (jdoe) followed by your domain password to get to your mail. Users may also access their email from the internet by going to the Web Site at https://mail.urmc.rochester.edu and following the same login procedure.

Once you have been migrated to Exchange 2003 do not use the old link on the intranet page as it will not work for users on MS Exchange 2003 nor will the following internet url http://mc.rochester.edu.

Change Password

Microsoft Outlook Web Access 2003 , now includes a Change Password feature for changing your domain password. To change your domain password you must connect to Microsoft Outlook Web Access 2003 and login in, then click on the ‘Go to Options’ icon. Here you scroll down to the Password option and click on the Change Password Button.

POP and IMAP

If you want to use a POP or IMAP email program on your computer (i.e. Outlook, Outlook Express, Mozilla Mail, Ximian Evolution, etc.), you will need to use either the POP or IMAP protocols with SSL. The URMC-SH mail server is a secure mail server requiring a secure (SSL) connection to the server in order to download mail. Please see Microsoft Exchange POP3 Client Settings for details.

Help pages are available for configuring the following common clients:

Macintosh Clients

The Exchange server support built into Entourage 2004 provides features designed especially for people who work in organizations running Microsoft® Exchange Server. Entourage 2004 is a powerful e-mail and personal information manager (PIM) that helps you get and send e-mail, search your Exchange global address list (GAL), import addresses, sync up your calendar and invite people to meetings using your Exchange account, all in one easy-to-use program.

Microsoft has identified a known issue within Entourage 2004 where delegate permissions do not work properly. In addition; there is no option to “Open Other User’s Folders”. This means an Entourage 2004 user cannot open other account folders including their calendars. Microsoft is currently working on a fix for this issue with no completion date identified.

Additionally the following six Macintosh Client options are available for operating within Exchange Server environments:

Netscape Mail

Netscape mail is not recommended for use for the URMC mail system. It not an enterprise level mail client, and has been known to suffer greater rates of data corruption than other more robust mail clients.

Entourage (versions earlier than 10.1.6)

Versions of Entourage before 10.1.6 are not supported. Please upgrade to the newest version as they have better features, are more stable, and have Exchange mail support. In order to request an upgrade; please contact the Computing Center Help Desk at 275-6865.
