For Nurses
I'd Still Be A Nurse Because...
All nurses have certain events and patients who they will never forget. Birth is usually a happy event. I will always remember a patient who came in for induction because her baby had died in utero just days before her due date. We talked a great deal about what would happen and all of her options. Her physician and I did our best to make the experience the best in could be in spite of the circumstances.
She and her husband were grateful for a hand to hold or my touch when she was in need. Preparing her baby for them to hold and take photographs was a very hard but important task. Footprints and hand prints were placed on a pink card along with the birth date, time, weight, and length of this baby. I taped the blond lock of the little girl's hair to the card as well. We all shed tears for this beautiful little girl whose life would never be beyond this day.
About a month later I received a wonderful thank you letter along with a living green plant arrangement. In her letter, this mom stated that she didn't know if i did it on purpose or not, but when I taped the lock of hair down, I left half of it uncovered so it could be touched. This became so important to them and their little two-year-old that they had to share their appreciation. It helped keep their angel girl real. Whenever I water this plant, I remember her and keep in mind what little things we do really can make a difference.
