Nurse Residency Program

What is the Nurse Residency Program?

The Nurse Residency Program is a summer program open to eligible student nurses entering their senior year in nursing school, who want to expand their clinical skills under the direction of a nurse mentor. The program offers work and learning opportunities for the student nurse who desires to better prepare for professional practice. 

What Can I Expect From a Nurse Residency Program?

  • Orientation that covers basic patient care skills (phlebotomy, blood glucose testing, EKG) and other support skills
  • Assignment to an area of clinical interest as available, to work collaboratively with a nurse mentor
  • Opportunities to apply clinical skills and tasks in the clinical environment under the direct supervision of a nurse mentor
  • A schedule that is the same as the Nurse Mentor's
  • Rotation to two observational experiences in specialty areas of interest
  • Educational program topics such as IV therapy, respiration assessment, pain management, and cardiology
  • A competitive rate of pay
  • Project assignments such as Unit Performance Improvement Project, Evidence-based Practice Research, and Unit In-service

What are the Requirements?

  • Current enrollment and completion of one year of clinical experience in an accredited school of nursing program
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must meet Highland Hospital's pre-employment requirements
  • Must be CPR certified

How Do I Apply?

  • Apply online at our Career Center.
  • All applications are due by February 1. Openings are limited. Interviews are scheduled with the nurse manager and nurse mentor to select the best candidates for the Nurse Residency Program.
