Research Overview
Following 25 years of extramurally funded bench research on peripheral and central dopaminergic systems and neural plasticity, I embarked on a "second" scholarly career in medical education. As Director of Curriculum Development in the Office of Curricular Affairs, I have been involved in the design and oversight of Rochester's new Double Helix Curriculum (DHC). The DHC weaves basic and clinical sciences through all four years of the medical curriculum like the intertwining strands of the double helix molecule. This integrated hybrid Problem-Based Learning (PBL) curriculum represents a major break through in medical education and has become in four short years a national model for undergraduate medical education. I am directly involved in training PBL tutors, course design, exam-writing workshops, and assessment design and implementation. Further information about the DHC may be obtained by going to the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry home page.
