Patient Care

Brown Square Community Health Center (Westside)

brown squareBrown Square is one of two locations that make up Westside Health Services, a federally funded Public Health Service Section 330 community health center. Located on the west side of town, about ten minutes from Highland Hospital, its mission is to provide comprehensive health care to the indigent and working poor of the surrounding community.

Socioeconomic and ethnic diversity typify the patient population, which includes the indigent, the working poor, the uninsured, and HMO participants. The patient mix includes persons of African American, Caribbean, Italian, Puerto Rican, Southeast Asian, African, and Eastern European heritage. Brown Square's services include medical and dental services and support services, such as an on-site social worker, a dietitian, a perinatal outreach worker, and HIV case management.

The center is staffed by full-time family physicians, six Family Medicine residents, and nurse practitioners. The support staff are an integral part of the community they serve and, as such, lend an invaluable viewpoint to the understanding of patients' problems. Videotaping is also available at Brown Square.

Visit the Brown Square website for more information.
