|
Doug Stockman, MD, joined the faculty in early 1997. He graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and completed his residency in Family Medicine from this Department in 1989. He has a strong interest in international health and moved to Liberia, West Africa, in early 1990, but was forced to return to the U.S. due to the Liberian civil war. While waiting to return to Liberia, Dr. Stockman held diverse positions including private practice, urgent care, and occupational medicine. In 1994 he moved to Ghana, West Africa where he and his wife built and operated a rural health post; he returned to the U.S. after a very busy two years. Presently, he is busy designing a new practice model and a new clinical facility for the department in his role as Medical Director. Dr. Stockman enjoys exploring new medical information technologies to improve the quality of clinical care while reducing the paperwork burden. He is creating with other department members an International Health Track (IHT) in Rochester and a new clinical experience for residents in rural Honduras. Much of his clinical time is spent caring for refugees recently resettled in the Rochester area; and he is a regional resource in refugee health care. Through the introduction of PalmOS-based Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) to the Department, Dr. Stockman has become an area expert in medical PDA use. When not at work, Dr. Stockman has some varied and unusual interests. He designed a passive solar home and personally installed the wind turbine and PV solar panel system that provides all electricity for his home. As an offshoot of his interest in antique farm tractors, Dr. Stockman is learning to weld. He also enjoys building all sorts of things, computers, woodworking, running, and reading. But the only things that really matter in his life are his wife and two daughters. |
