| OVERVIEW

| Dr. Caton is recognized as an international leader in periodontal education and research. In 1993 he was chosen for the William J. Gies Award in periodontology as testimony to his achievements in advancing research and therapeutics in periodontology. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology and served as a director of the board from 1988-1994 and chairman in 1993-94. Dr. Caton is past president of the American Academy of Periodontology. In 1995 he was granted a fellowship by the Academy for his service and contributions. In 2004, he received the highest award granted to a member of the Academy, the Gold Medal, for contributions to the specialty of Periodontics.
Dr. Caton has been on the faculty of the periodontics program at Eastman Dental Center since 1973 and has been the program director since 1990. He and his graduate students have conducted research in periodontal wound healing, animal models, diagnosis, and human clinical trials. He has published over 85 scientific articles and book chapters.
