OVERVIEW
|
Dr. Friedman has wide-ranging research
interests in the health and health care of the elderly. He is the current recipient of a 5-year Career Academic Award from the National Institute of Mental Health through which he is studying the relationship between depression and function and their effects on healthcare service use and expenditures among older people. He was recently Co-Principal Investigator on a study sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on depression in primary care.
Dr. Friedman has
worked on several Medicare demonstration projects, including ACCESS:Medicare,
the Medicare Alzheimer's Disease Demonstration, and the Medicare Primary and Consumer-Directed Care Demonstration. He is continuing investigations on the latter, which included the following interventions: (1) a chronic disease self-management/health promotion nurse intervention, (2) a consumer-directed voucher for in-home supportive goods and services not normally covered by Medicare, and (3) the combination of the two interventions. Dr. Friedman has conducted research examining case management, geriatric practice in Medicare health maintenance organizations, variations in Medicare spending across the states, and differences in Medicare services utilization between a Social Health Maintenance Organization (Social HMO) and a Medicare risk HMO. Since 2003 he has been the Director of the PhD Program in Health Services Research and Policy.
