Predoctoral Education

Family Medicine Elective (FAM 608) | Family Medicine Adult Inpatient Elective (FAM 612) | Family Medicine Elective in Rural Honduras (FAM 620) | Living in Rochester

Welcome to the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry Predoctoral Program in Family Medicine.  Thank you for your interest in finding out more about our curriculum.

Undergraduate medical education at the University of Rochester School of Medicine has long been informed by the strong tradition of biopsychosocial medicine in Rochester. Recognizing the rapid evolution of biomedical knowledge and the need for students to develop skills of lifelong learning, the medical school launched its Double Helix Curriculum in 1999.

Implementation of this model has led to continued active evaluation of curricular changes and directions, as well as the development of new assessment models.  The goals and values that have shaped these innovations are aligned with those of the Department of Family Medicine.  Several Department faculty have been instrumental in this process of change and continue to participate actively in predoctoral education through the four years a medical student attends the UR.

Program Overview

The Family Medicine Predoctoral Program includes the following:

  • Family Medicine Teaching in Years 1 and 2
  • The Ambulatory Clerkship (ACE) is a core clerkship in ambulatory primary care, which begins in the second semester of Year 1 and continues throughout Year 2 for all students. During this 18-month clerkship, students have a continuity experience with primary care doctors in the community, including many Family Physicians. The course includes an emphasis on prevention and screening in the first year, and then turns to presentation, diagnosis, and management of common primary care diseases during Year 2.
  • Family Medicine Teaching in Years 3 and 4

Several electives are currently offered to students from the University of Rochester and, as space allows, other medical schools.  UR students are currently required to complete a Family Medicine or Primary Care clerkship in Years 3 and 4.  Select the following links for more information about each elective. Other special electives may also be arranged by contacting individual faculty, or facilitated through Dr. Stefenie King.

Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG)
The FMIG at the University of Rochester has been an active and dedicated student-run group, hosting monthly lunchtime lectures throughout the academic year, “Dinner with a Doc” in the home of a Family Medicine faculty member, workshops, and student projects such as “Tar Wars” presentations in regional grade schools.
