Welcome!
The goal of the University of Rochester Family Medicine Fellowship Program is to collaborate with nationally and internationally renowned faculty mentors in developing educators, researchers, and future academic leaders in Family Medicine.
Fellows have the opportunity to enter the Master Educator Program or the Research Training Program (with the option of completing a 2-year MPH).
As a fellow, you:
- Collaborate with nationally and internationally renowned faculty mentors
- Have the option of working at a federally qualified healthcare center
- Learn more about the biopsychosocial model, family-oriented health care, and patient-centeredness.
- Participate in scholarly activities and research projects
- Give presentations at national meetings
- Publish papers
Fellowship Tracks
- Faculty Development (Training in Primary Care Medicine & Dentistry) consists of these fellowship tracks: Idealized Medical & Micro-team Practice (IMMP), Behavior Change, Family Systems Medicine, Health Care Disparities Research, Family Medicine OB, and Patient-Centered Care
- Primary Care Family Psychology
- ECRIP (New York State Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program) consists of two tracks: Research Fellowship in Patient-Centered Care and Determinants of Risk and Risk Behaviors in the Deaf Population
Rochester Center to Improve Communication Health Care
The fellowship office is located in a 5000-square-foot building at 1381 South Aveue in Rochester. The center was founded in 2003 to consolidate research in a variety of areas relating to communication between physicians and patients, among health care professionals, and media influences on the patient-physician relationship.
Highlights of the Family Medicine Research Programs
- Nationally and internationally renowned research faculty include physicians, psychologists, social workers, and statisticians with extensive publications and conference presentation credits. The Family Medicine Program was, in 1967, the third such program established in the U.S.
- The Department has received multiple funding awards from a variety of federal, state, and local agencies and private foundations, including the NIH, AHRQ, HRSA, CDC, Robert Wood Johnson, and AAFP Foundations
- History of departmental fellowships for almost three decades
- Faculty Development Fellowship has been funded by HRSA for five consecutive three-year cycles
- Home of the biopsychosocial model

The University of Rochester Research Environment
The University of Rochester has an ambitious 10-year, $500 million Medical Center research initiative, which began in 1997. This includes two research buildings – costing $110 million and comprising 383,000 square feet (both completed) – as well as the recruitment of 100 research scientists and 500 technicians and support personnel.
Key aspects of the University’s research environment
- In 2003-2004, the University of Rochester received over $333 million in grants and contracts, representing a total of 2,421 awards and 878 Principal Investigators with active awards
- Consistently ranked within the top 30 medical schools in the amount of NIH funds awarded
- In 2003, the University received 439 grants from the NIH alone
- 2004 proposal funding requests totaled $1.3 billion
- Between 1999 and 2002, there was a 60.8 percent increase in research funding at the University
