Highlights and Activities of the Family Medicine Department
- Residency -
This program is one of the oldest Family Medicine residencies in the
US. The faculty includes internationally known academic Family Physicians,
specialists in OB/GYN, practicing clinical Family Physicians,
and experienced Family Therapists. The Department combines the rigors
of a university setting with the practical and friendly character of
a community hospital.
- Patient
Care at the Family Medicine Center - The
Lovejoy Family Medicine Center is the primary outpatient site,
where faculty, residents, and other health care providers see their
patients. The new Highland Family Health Center is also home to Cornhill
Internal Medicine, Highland Apothecary, Strong Lab Services, and Strong
Behavioral Health. Over 50,000 patient visits occur each year at this
one site, and the number continues to grow. Residents can also choose
to work at the Brown
Square Community Health Center, which is an inner city facility.
- Global
Health Track - In 2002, the Department of Family Medicine created
a Global Health Track for interested residents.
- Educational
Activities - In addition to the many learning opportunities available
through subspecialty conferences and inpatient teaching sessions, the
Department of Family Medicine offers its own extensive educational
events. A small sampling is available for the online visitor.
- Research - The faculty in the
URMC Department of Family Medicine are some of the most prolific researchers
in Primary Care topics. This enthusiasm reflects the faculty's
desire to address unanswered questions that directly affect patient care.
Our Family Medicine Research Programs building is home to the Center
for Communication in Healthcare.
- Medical
Student Education - The Department of Family Medicine is an integral
part of the Predoctoral Program at the University of Rochester School
of Medicine & Dentistry. Our faculty and residents teach medical
students in both the outpatient and inpatient setting. Fourth-year
electives for non-UR medical students are available.
- Fellowships -
Fellowships are offered in Family Systems Medicine, Obstetrics, HIV disease,
and other topics that reflect faculty interests.
- Families, Systems & Health: The
Journal of Collaborative Family Health Care - Faculty members
Susan McDaniel, PhD, and Thomas Campbell, MD, are the creators and
principle editors of this highly respected international journal. The above
link will take you to the Journal's website for more information.
- PDAs -
In recent years, the Department adopted PalmOS-based
Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) for all residents in the program.
